As a Vanderbilt law student tutoring in Vandy's Athletic Department under the guidance of the late great David Williams (the first black Athletic Director in the SEC), Amal Yamusah was determined to address the lack of tailored professional development resources for student-athletes looking to prepare for post-playing careers.
Reflecting on his own experience as a 3-year letterman on Morehouse College's football team, he developed a thesis for a nonprofit organization that would provide athletes with the career preparation, coaching, community, competition, and curriculum they needed to transform their athletic experiences into a powerful tool for professional success. This initiative saw early success, with five of the athletes Amal tutored at Vanderbilt joining MAP's first cohort in 2020 and securing job offers at leading companies.
Colin Anderson (Vanderbilt Football) - McMaster Carr
Donaven Tennyson (Vanderbilt Football) - McKinsey & Co.
Isaiah Rice (Vanderbilt Basketball) - McKinsey & Co.
Kaira Brown (Vanderbilt Track & Field) - Deloitte
Taiya Shelby (Vanderbilt Track & Field) - Under Armour
In 2020, after an emerging career at a world-renowned sports agency, Amal left the private sector to found the Make-A-Play Foundation, motivated by the belief that he could reach thousands of athletes looking to make a play in the professional world and beyond.
Today, MAP has prepared 2,500+ high-achieving athletes from under-resourced backgrounds for professional success at leading companies, forging corporate partnerships with Fortune 50, 100, and 500 companies like Anheuser Busch, Bank of America, Deloitte, DICK'S Sporting Goods, Ford Motors, Guggenheim Securities, JP Morgan, Kraft Heinz, McDonald's, Major League Soccer (MLS), Microsoft, Oliver Wyman, UBS, Warburg Pincus, Wells Fargo, and many more.
We value each of our MAP athletes and provide them with a personalized “Fall Forward Plan.” This plan, built on our 5Cs of career, coaching, community, competition, and curriculum, is designed to help them transform their athletic experiences into professional success, cultivating a unique pipeline of scholar athletes eager to compete in the business world and beyond.
